El 24 de marzo al 10 de junio de 1999, la OTAN intervino en el conflicto armado, estallado en 1998 en el territorio de la antigua Yugoslavia, sin la aprobación de las Naciones Unidas. La agresión de la OTAN contra Yugoslavia duró 78 días y la alianza argumentó que la razón principal de la operación, cuyo nombre en código era ‘Fuerza Aliada’ era evitar el genocidio de los albaneses de Kosovo.
Según informa la agencia rusa de noticias TASS, citando a fuentes de la OTAN, aviones de la Alianza Atlántica realizaron 38 000 incursiones y llevaron a cabo 10 000 bombardeos, matando a entre 3 500 y 4 000 personas e hiriendo a unos 10 000 heridos, dos tercios de ellos civiles. Los daños materiales también ascendieron a 100 000 millones de dólares.
